Question 2: What are the ways in which we learn?

People learn in many ways and there is no single right or wrong way of learning. The preferred ways in which we learn are sometimes called learning styles or learning preferences.

1. What is your learning style? Find out by following this link and completing the online quiz then

As alternative site is here: http://www.learning-styles-online.com/inventory/

2. Discuss the results of your quiz for your answer to question 2 in the section below

The VARK Questionnaire Results
My scores were:
  • Visual: 2
  • Aural: 5
  • Read/Write: 3
  • Kinaesthetic: 6

I did the VARK questionnaire and I discovered that I have a multi modal (AK) learning preference.
I agree that i am multi, but i thought i was going to be more visual. So it was interesting to find out.

I can use the following help sheets for study strategies that apply to my learning preferences:
multi modal
aural
kinaesthetic

Danielle's responce:
I did the VARK quentionnaire from the link above and i discovered that i have a "multimodal (VARK) learning perference".
My results are spread across all of the areas, visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic fairly evenly. I must admit that this
didn't exactly sursprise me, i have always had the throught that i learn in multipual ways from my schooling experence.
Anyway, with out dragging on much longer here are my results:
Visual = 11
Aural = 10
Read/write = 08
Kinesthetic = 12

Hope u all enjoy ur results

I also did the VARk questionaire and discovered that I have a multimodal approach to study. I feel that my main two results are pretty accurate. I like to see what I need to do and experience it rather that learn about it over and over again.

I feel the answers where quite accurate about me. I do prefer to see what it is that we are doing even if it is just a hand out. Like Sara I like to see what it is I need to do and get that hands on experience to remember and learn what it is. Im not a very fast writer so I do like to be able to look at the things we are doing or talking about also talking to other people about it helps.

I have a multimodal (ARK) learning style which is lowest in the visual learning area which surprised me and higher in the Reading and writing.
I do like things to be written down so that I can refer back to them as I find aural learning is not always retained.

When it comes to anything electronic or IT related I find it much easier if someone spends some time with me rather than wading my way through instructions and wasting time. That way also I can use the aural learning by asking questions along the way. I can then take notes to refer back to.

People do learn in many ways, this is certainly proven after looking through the varied learning styles results from my Unitec class. With this knowledge we are empowered to accept each other’s differing learning styles, which will also extend to the children in our early childhood education centres, therefore allowing us all to help each other learn.

After completing the Learning Styles Inventory my results are as follows:
- Visual: 18
- Aural: 6
- Physical: 14
- Logical: 13

The VARK Questionnaire results are as follows:
- Visual: 8
- Aural: 3
- Read/Write: 2
- Kinesthetic: 14

I found I have strong kinesthetic (doing) and visual learning preferences.

I suspected I was kinesthetic and visual though was surprised that these preferences were so strong. This was confirmed when it came to viewing the helpful tips that were available on this website and I enjoyed being able to move the ball to show this information, rather than reading it in list form. Whether it comes to learning or teaching, I love being able to get hands-on, using all senses – sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. I love to express through experimentation, trial and error and to tell stories through paint and playdough! My best work will be achieved in the sandpit, water trough or on the floor building and creating. My challenge in learning will be to absorb academic information through the more tradition ways of aural, reading and writing.

In the VARK Test;

When I compared the two tests, it seemed inconsistant in the area of Kinesthetic.
The Learning Styles test shows Kinesthetic as a favoured way of learning, yet in the Vark test its my least.

Either way I'd have to agree with the Learning Styles Inventory as, I prefer to learn in a social setting, to toss around ideas with other people and hear what they have to say.
But on the other hand, I am a note taker and a wizz with a red pen & highlighter!

Both tests were reasonably accurate, though they did differ slightly in the visual and aural results. Like Sue, I feel that I do not always retain aural learning. I prefer to experience the lesson, take notes and read and then have the opportunity to ask questions. I enjoy group discussions as the different points of view challenge my opinion. They also give me the ability to discuss what has been taught and ensure what I have retained is accurate. Confirming my learning style has enabled me to get the most out of my study. I now know how best to approach my learning.

Good afternoon all,

After completing the VARK test, it stated that I have Multimodal learning style and the results are as follows:-

Visual - 9
Aural - 7
Read/Write - 11
Kinesthetic - 11

2.It is great to have confirmation of my learning style via this quiz. I enjoy reading and writing, taking notes, taking more notes and being able to refer back and understanding where it connects. I tend to enjoy reading with the children and even more when they are part of the story. I am also a hands on person who enjoys the question and answer sessions and the group environment, when all different ideas and thoughts are compiled to facilitate our group. Visual is also an effective learning style which I do relate to and using more through learning stories. Aural somehow is the lowest but not far off which does show that I do listen. In conclusion, my learning style is multimodal and definitely do prefer the flexibility.

After completing the VARK quiz I was told I have a mild Kinesthetic learning style. This wasn't suprising to me at all becuase I like to be put in the situation to actually feel it.Also I like to have material to read through or highlight to get the main points. These are my results, I feel they were pretty accurate.

I completed the VARK Questionnaire and was impressed at how accurate it was. My results are as follows -

  • Visual 4
  • Aural 7
  • Read/Write 6
  • Kinesthetics 9

The result says I have a Multimodal (VARK) Learning preference, which is quite common. I got the highest score for Kinesthetic (doing) which is quite accurate as I am a very hands-on learner. I certainly need to do and experience things to understand it better. The second highest score was for Aural (hearing) which makes sense as I like to be explained so that I can then use it practically.

After completing the VARK Questionaire i found the results to be very accurate.

The results shown here really do describe me as a person, and the type of ways that help's me learn not faster but better. Now as you can see that my Aural is very high. And that is because i am the type of person who doe's not read or talk about things from a peice of paper. I would say it how it is and tell you from pass experience. Now that i have done the Questionaire it's given me a direction to where i need to improve on and how i can support myself and my learning. It is good to know that i am a Multimodal Learner aswell, and knowing that i am part of the 60% of the population that has got Multimodal is like me wanting to go another 60% more of what i have accomplished.

In response to this question I chose to do the VARK test. My result were as follows:

Visual - 6
Aural - 4
Read/Write - 2
Kinesthetic - 4
Main Learning preference - Visual

After discovering that I was classified a visual learner, I did some research on what qualities a learner such as myself posses. When working with a visual learner one may be faced with statements such as, “let’s look at this differently,” “I can’t quite picture it,” “Lets draw a diagram/map,” or, “I’d like to get a different perspective.” Visual learners tend to see the whole picture, and draw diagrams to display large amounts of information. They use symbols and words to represent ideas, use colours to highlight major and minor links, and are often found making lists of various information to organize ideas and thoughts. Visual learners tend to have great instinctive direction and can easily visualize objects. They enjoy drawing and scribbling, and tend to better comprehend new ideas when they can be related to prior knowledge.

Alike to many of the students in the class, I feel the test was correct. Personally, I can relate to being a visual learner very strongly. I often find myself creating lists and using different colours for different ideas. My thoughts are organized on paper with highlighters, also using symbols and circling and/or underlining words that I find are of significance. Lists are a huge part of my organization, and when explaining something I find myself drawing pictures and diagrams if the other person does not understand. However, I do not find myself drawing diagrams in my study, this I found interesting. I learn best in class when the information is presented visually and verbally, and find myself benefiting when able to express my opinion and ask questions, whether it be in a lecture, or in group discussions.

When I researched study tips for visual learners is suggested using flash cards, mind concept maps, illustrating notes, and highlighting important features. I found this interesting as a lot of these concepts I already use constantly whilst studying. I believe throughout high school in the past 5 years, I have found the most effective way for me to study by using a lot of these techniques. I am not surprised by the result of the VARK test and plan to utalise what I have learnt throughout the next 3 years. These skills will also help me with art activities in the classroom, as art is a very visual subject. My visual learning will turn me towards activities such as story books, painting and crafts when working with the children. My natural organization skills will be helpful when planning activities in the classroom also. I look forward to utilizing these skills as much as possible.

I find it very interesting that although we a different people, a lot of us has simerlar learning prefernces, and many of us have triple preferences (in reguards to the VARK questionaaire), by which I mean we have three prefered ways of learning.

I discovered that I have a multi modal (VARK) learning preference. I have always thought of myself as a kinesthetic learner; the hands on approach. I see myself as a practical learner. But I was quite surprised that actually I am more of a reader/writer learner. I probably base this on my annoyance at having to read manuals/instructions. I would prefer to be shown how to work or operate it, than having to wade through instructions. However, I do enjoy to read and write and I think I underestimate my own ability to write. So, that is probably the reason why I didn't see myself as a reader/writer learner. This is all very interesting and the quiz has certainly made me aware of my learning styles.

The online VARK questionnaire revealed that i have a strong kinesthetic preference for learning. I can relate to my results as i am not one who likes to sit down and listen to information being thrown at me. I prefer to experience situations physically and tend to get distracted quite easily in a classroom environment.

According to Boyes,K. (2001). Creating an effective learning environment, there are two types kinesthetic learners.
The tactile/movement-orientated learner
The feeling-orientated learner
I feel that i am the tactile/movement learner and as i struggle to sit still for long. I fidget, wriggle and have a need to touch anything and everything. Im always clicking my pen in class and shaking my leg just so that im still moving. Movement definitely helps me to learn.

When I first saw my results I was in shock, thinking that can not be right I prefer to be shown a task then to give it a go myself. After thinking a little while longer I realised that is right, I find it depends on the task that I am doing to what I prefer. If it is a physical task I prefer to have someone show me what I need to be doing then to get in there and give it a go, where in a class situation I will quite happily just sit and listen or read books and scribble and I will understand what it is I need to do. Very fascinating.

This was an intriguing exercise and I played around with the questionnaire multiple times to try to influence the outcome of the learning preference. I found that if I was honest I came up with a similar result each time. Visual and kinesthetic learning preferences both make sense especially when I think back to attempting a task I have never tried before. I will often ask a person to show me how to do the task and then attempt it myself to make sure I have fully understood. I feel a little silly but I even did this when the head teacher at my centre told me you needed to hold the toilet door handle in a certain way to make sure it locked properly. I asked her to show me and then did the same thing straight away to make the information concrete in my head. When sitting an exam I will often visualise the appropriate page of my notes with the answers on it. If I am lucky the page will then appear in my head with the writing on it. I also have an addiction to post it notes and high lighter pens. When I have the main points or title clearly marked the text makes sense to me otherwise it just swims in front of me, a sea of nondescript words. I also find that I use different learning styles for different activities. I agree that in some situations I like to use more than one style to learn at one time.
What is interesting about doing this exercise is that it highlights how we all learn differently and as an extension of that so will the children that we teach. I think back to how I achieved varied results in the same subject but with different teachers at school. With one teacher I failed and the other I passed. I did not recognise why this happened at the time but was euphoric when a subject that had confused me suddenly made sense. It was such a break through. I can only hope I can be as versatile and adapt to the different learning needs and styles of the children that I teach.

Robin Clark

Response to Maia:

I think you’ve just pointed out something very important Maia. Although personally we may learn one way, it is our responsibility as teachers to incorporate each different way of learning into our lessons. Therefore making sure each student is catered to in their own way, shape and form. It is our responsibility to recognize how each child learns, to work with them in the way they understand, in hope to help them grow.
I’ve had similar experiences to you, I have had several clashes with different teachers over the years and it wasn’t until my early childhood teacher in 6th form, sat down and recognized my individual learning needs as a student that I came to the realization of what a difference understanding makes. And although it seems only a small concept, if we can get enough people to realize it, if we can get enough people to get rid of that file in their head, if we can get enough people to take this concept further, we will find that the children are going to benefit. And if the children are going to benefit, why would you ignore it? The children are what we are here for, and if we can learn a way of teaching that’s not only going to just teach them, but help them ultimately succeed as ‘students’ then it must be worth doing.
I would like to learn about teaching visually, kinesthetically, aurally, and with reading/writing. I would like to learn how to incorporate each individual learning need into my teaching, and possibly find some activities we can do with the children to help further the whole concept. I would like to learn how to recognize each of these learning needs within the children’s play, and in what ways I can expand on them.

In response to Robin:
Thank you Robin for articulating and extending what it was that I was getting at. I have found the whole process of this assignment very interesting and thought provoking. The remarkable achievement for me was that I failed consistently in mathematics throughout primary and intermediate and cannot recall passing a single maths test, although when I got to high school and even with massive gaps in my learning I passed my maths exam. As I studied at a Steiner school I had the same maths teacher throughout primary and intermediate (part of the philosophy is to have consistency with your teacher, so you stay with them until high school). I passed my first test with my new teacher who either had a different teaching style or took on board my learning preference. I went through school thinking I was dumb and would never amount to anything because I did not learn the same way as others in my class. It is enlightening to realise there is no right or wrong way to learn just different ways and the responsibility is with the teacher to recognise this. Like you say the next step is to make sure we have a range of activities, which take into account the different learning styles and preferences and incorporate this into our teaching.

By doing the VARK quiz it showed me that my learning style was first aural second kinesthethic. Not knowing what these learning styles meant I researched to get more of an understanding of the two and found that: Aural learners soak up information easiest when it is delievered in an auditory way.Kinesthetic learners like to try things themselves (hands on), They also find it easier to remember things they have done not things thay have read. So now having a better understanding of what the two words mean, I would say that describes my learning quite well. I personally have not done the VARK quiz before but have done others which have not describe my learning styles as clear as the VARK quiz has.So now by indentifying my learning styles I can understand why in some areas of my learning I feel able and in other I struggle, in saying that though it is great to have something to work with.

Victoria Walters

Hello guys, I have completed both quizzes and there were very interested. I’ve know what I am good at or not.

Here are the results;
I have a multi model in VARK quiz:

· Visual - 11 - Of course! I am more visual on things with my eyes - my eyes are ears!
· Aural - 4 - I don't hear with my ears. :-)
· Read/Write - I like to read a lot of books, mostly non-friction or other books, magazines, not text books although it would be interesting for me to see how ability I can read/understand text books in the next couple of weeks/months.
· Kinesthetics - 12 - I'm more hands on learner, doing/using with my hands - more effective to learn that way.

And for free learning styles inventory quiz:- · Visual - 18 - same as above
· Social - 15 - I like people to come to me to talk to me or I have had people, who come to me for advice in the past, and also I like to be in a small group for social - I am not a good conversation in a large group.
· Physical - 15 - I believe I am in more physical with my hands & body language movement when I am in physical area, for e.g. organise a theme with Deaf people or community I tend to be move around, I think.
· Aural - 5 - same as above.
· Verbal - 17 - I am more eye reader on people's lip reading when making conversation.
· Solitary - 25 - I do like to be independent, or am likely to concentrate well sometimes but I would like to be in the group to gain more knowledge from the group.
Logical - 31 - That's me, thinking cap on!

Hey these fonts are fun to play with. Enthusiastic as always, I was curious to see what both tests said, like so many of you. I think that from the form that I have taken in writing this many of you will see that I am mostly visual and kinesthetic. I always love to try out something... hope the pink isn't too hard to read.
In the VARK test I'm a VK learner (that's visual/kinesthetic)
I got
Visual 14
Aural 6
Read/write 5
Kinesthetic 13

Then I did the Learning - styles on line test.
Not surprisingly the scores here reflected the vark test.

visual 23
social 24
physical 23
aural 14
verbal 13
solitary 12
logical 17

None of this surprised me, as I pretty much am that way, and both these test's pretty much said what I knew about myself anyway. When my son was in primary school, we had an excellent speaker (some 10 years ago or so) who went over this way of assessing people’s way of learning and I have tried for many years to implement this way of learning with my children.
I do read however (I belong to two book clubs) but the books that interest me the most are historical novels, this pretty much indicates that I am best learning about history with a story built around it so that my mind runs around imagining the story in pictures but learning the facts about the past.
I read in pictures!

To go over what Robin was saying about Maia's answer... It is interesting to follow that line of thought and wonder if there is any research done on implementing this across the whole school system. It would be interesting to have whole classrooms dedicated to visual/kinesthetic learners, reader/ writers in another room etc. I think that it would help the children that fall behind because they can't learn in the general way. I think I might have a wee look out for this sort of research. It's not enough to just understand that there are different types of learners, it is important to make sure that the children who learn differently get the right sort of teaching. Unfortunately at the moment far too many children that are visual kinesthetic learners come out of the system believing that they are dumb. My son was one that was affected by this and with my working very hard he is now doing very well in IT here at Unitec.

From these results it would seem I am a multi-modal learner. That makes quite a bit of sense to me ,as I do like to learn in a variety of ways.
I was a little surprised to see that I had no scores for visual learning. On further reflection it did make sense that it wasn’t a key aspect for me. I like to read, but it’s only when other tools are included that I feel that the information is actually ‘going in’.I also have a tendency to need to go over things a few times before they start to make sense for me[or maybe that’s just old age!]

Here are my results from the Learning Styles survey. I found most of it to be correct, obviously because I did it! However it surprised me to know that I rated rather highly in the Solitary area. Does this mean that I am an unsociable and prefer to work on my own most of the time? Although, my Verbal area was higher still. I was also a little dismayed to see that the Logical area was so low, as I regard myself to be a logical thinker/learner. I guess it is 'food for thought' and I will reflect on this more.

My results for the VARK test showed that I learn best with kinesthetic learning. This makes sense as I am always wanting to do things in order to learn and need to try it out for myself to see results. My aural is not a very good learning strategy for me as i always seem to zone out and lose focus. If i dont get to try things out myself I find that visual learning is good as ill process the information more if diagrams and examples are put in front of me. I think I will focus hard this year at aural and read/write learning because you dont always get to try things out or have examples in the classroom. Abby Pine

After doing the VARK questionnaire I discovered that I have a mild visual learning preference. I can relate to this as I know I take a lot more in through images than just reading words. I also think that I am more of a kinesthetic learner than my results have shown.

What are the ways in which we learn?

I decided to take both the questionaires to discover my learning style. The VARK quiz lead me to believe that I have a multimodal learning preference, I am part of the 60% population that also fits into this category.

Visual: 4
Aural: 5
Read/Write: 5

The Inventory learning style quiz I completed also showed I have a multimodal learning preference, although they are quite different in the way each style is scored both the questionaires are very much the same as they leveled out with variety.
When I was comparing each quiz I couldnt work out which style in the inventory matched up to the read/write style in the Vark quiz.

Visual: 12 I believe this is my strongest preference, to be able to use pictures and images to help me understand.
Aural: 9 I didnt think this would score so high, although sometimes it is really effective.
Physical: 9 (Kinesthetic) I love using my hands and sense of touch.
Social: 5 Groups is a good way to learn others perceptions on a topic, but sometimes I can tend to shy away and be in the background.
Verbal: 5 Again I am very shy, speaking in front of the class would make me very nervous.
Solitary: 10 I always work well alone once I know what I have to do.
Logical: 1 (Mathmatical) I do prefer facts.

Overall I am very open to most styles of learning, I find this very interesting to know about myself as I never really thought about it before.
I hope to use it to my advantage, in the present and for the future.

After completing the two learning style quizzes it has confirmed that I am a visual learner. I have always been interested and liked doing things that made a visual affect. Such as using colours, diagrams, posters and slides. Looking at what visual learner’s like and do, it describes me. I have always thought myself as a hands on kind of person and this is proven in my results but visual learner was higher.
My results also showed that I am not really a reader and writer. This wasn’t a shock to me because earlier when I was doing my SWOT analysis I had Reading as one of my weaknesses. Words don’t really appeals as much as pictures do to me. To me like the saying goes “a picture paints a thousand words.”
I have found that after completing these quizzes it has made things more clearer for me. I know what type of learner I am and what I can do to help my learning develop. Also from this activity I have learnt about other learning styles and this will help me as a teacher. By knowing and being able to determine what type of learner a child is, this will help me teach them in the way that they learn best.

WHAT TYPE OF LEARNER AM I?

So what type of learner am I? According to the VARK Questionnaire I am a Visual Learner. See Results below:

  • Visual: 11
  • Aural: 5
  • Read/Write: 6
  • Kinesthetic: 7

These results did not surprise me at all. I always new that was a visual or even kinesthetic learner. I find sitting in a classroom and having a teacher talk or write things down, it does not seem to work for me I find it incredibly
Un-interesting and I think my brain sub concisely switches off. I think that is why the Unitec Degree program appealed to me. It had the practical side of it so we can put what we learn into practice straight away. I find that I prefer to work in a group-based environment. If I was trying to study for a exam or prepare for an essay. I would find it a lot easier to perhaps use mind maps to help my thought process, or even use flash cards. Drawing lots of diagrams helps me to remember more information as well. If we look at class room situations. Having images or diagrams on the board is heaps easier, even very simple things such as a piece of paper in front of me with the written material that is being talked about So this gives me the opportunity to go over it again in my own time but to also right information off to it/making notes, that maybe are more or less in my own words, so it will enable me to understand it a lot easily. This also made taking the course at Unitec more appealing as a lot of the work we do, we do as a team. I think it is also as a critical that we have resources available to the children that appeal to there learning styles in mind. I think also as teachers that it is important that we teach in away that appeals to all learners as well. If we teach more visually for example and some children are more Aural they will not learn as much.

My Vark Questionnaire results:

  • Visual: 3
  • Aural: 5
  • Read/Write: 4
  • Kinesthetic: 7

My results from the vark questionnaire show I have a mild kinesthetic learning preferencce. I believe this is true because I learn more from carrying out a physical activity rather than being told or reading how to do it.

I was a bit surprised from my answers to see I am less of a visual learner and more of a reading and writing learner, which I believe is not correct. I learn more visually than reading and writing, because reading is something I do not enjoy so much.
This questionnaire was good to do because now I know what sort of learner I am.

I took the VARK quiz and found that I am a "mild kinesthetic" learner. Although I agree with this outcome, I feel that my learning style would be more accurate when taking into account the other aspects (such as visual (7) and aural (5)). This is because I learn better when I am shown a diagram of the subject (visual), then it is explained to me (aural), and then I like to try it for myself (kinesthetic).

So, I agree with the conclusion of this quiz, but still believe that I am a mixed learner!

Anjani Prakash

My VARK questionnaire scores were as follows:
  • Visual: 2
  • Aural: 10
  • Read/Write: 9
  • Kinesthetic: 7

From these results it tells me Iam a multimodal (ARK) learning preference. As I attended high school in Fiji, we had limited resources therefore used whatever was available. Visual was always left out which accounts for my low score there otherwise Iam all ok in learning in all styles which are visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic.

Les Queenin

After completing both tests I found the results to be quite different.

Vark test results were as follows:
Visual 6
Aural 6
Read/Write 6
Kinesthetic 12

This test shows that I am predominantly a hands on learner which is very much my learning style. I did find it unusual that the other learning styles had the same score.

The Learning Styles test results were as follows:
Visual 18
Social 13
Physical 15
Aural 25
Verbal 13
Solitary 7
Logical 10

The Learning Styles test had a very different conclusion. My highest scores were aural and visual. After reading through what an aural leant I quickly realised that I have very high aural and kinesthetic traits. This makes me a multimodal learner which means I like to learn from more then one source. This can be a disadvantage as multimodal learners prefer all modes to be satisfied and trust the incoming information.

The outcome of my VARK questionnaire was spot on with how I learn and how I prefer my learning, read/write was my highest score and it actually describes exactly what i do. I have always preferred that way of learning where I take notes and later on write down what I might actually think about what I've learnt in class, for me personally it gives me a much larger picture and understanding.

Results of the VARK questionnaire:

Aural 4
Read/write 9
Kinesthetic 3

1. I completed the VARC questionnaire with the following results
*Visual: 2
*Aural: 4
*Read/Write: 4
*Kinesthetic: 8
I have a strong kinesthetic learning preference

2. It was interesting to see the majority of people have a multimodal learning preference to learning when my results showed my learning style strongly in the kinesthetic style or learning by physically doing things. This wasn’t a great surprise to me as this corresponds directly to how I have successfully studied in the past which has been a hands-on approach including an apprenticeship style that was mostly taught by demonstration. I find that when being given information I am constantly thinking about how this would influence my actions and procedures in a practical sense.
Knowing that I respond better from doing things means I now know that I will need to take better notes and implement better study habits like talking with others to help make ideas more concrete.

I found the quiz interesting and some questions were hard for me to answer ,this helped me to figure out what kind of learner I am ,although I still feel strongly that I am a visional learner as I learn things easier through pictures and diagrams .I will take notice of these qualities I have in the way I learn and use it to help with my learning.

My results from the Vark Questions do not really range all that much. I believe that i learn from all areas of learning styles, changing sometimes to make the learning more interesting.

And from the Learning Styles Online:

I have a multimodal learning preference which is same as Kushla, Anjani, and Fal’e. I was surprise with the result because I never thought myself as an aural learner. I think I learn better when I see how something is working and then I try it myself. In this way, I can memorize thing easily.

AURAL..i didn't see that coming. I thought I was more visual then aural..Its easier for me to see things rather then listen to someone speak. i am sure we will find out soon when I am back in good ol class!!!!

My learning preference is for visual style of learning. I gain more knowledge and understanding through demonstration of colours, images and by communicating with others. I prefer group discussions and I always enjoy in discussing with my friends in visual style. I don’t enjoy reading and writing.

I did VARK Questionnaire as well, and as the result shows, I have a mild Visual learning preference. That didn’t surprise me as I knew that I am a visual learner and I am quite a kinaesthetic learner as well as I like “hands on” learning and love to see things. In contrast my reading, writing and aural are my weaknesses as English is my second language and I am not the type of person who loves to read, I feel shy to speak out and sometimes I can’t really express my thought though speaking. I found it is really tough to be only a visual learner as sometimes you have to read, write and speak and when the times comes you have to face it, so I have to improve those skill if I want to succeed in my studies.

I did this test and found I am multi-model and was glad to see others were too. I do think this is correct because I am a very visual person, even when people are talking about their weekend or some kind of story not just in the classroom, I picture it in my head and like to know small details to help me get a better understanding of it. I also love to read and both reading and writing go together. Reading something yourself lets you understand it in your own way and then having a go at writing helps it stick in your memory better for some people. I just really need to improve my aural skills as I find it hard to concentrate and take much in when I am in a lecture so have to really focus, it's also because I get distracted very easily.

Mandy’s VARK test:
My scores was:
  • Visual: 2
  • Aural: 5
  • Read/Write: 4
  • Kinesthetic: 10
Upon doing the VARK test I found many of the questions in the test, I had given more than a single answer. This I found was because I had more than one way of doing thing, and it depended on such things like, what the task was, what I wanted to learn, or how I would give directions.
Overall I have a strong Kinesthetic preference of learning, this was no surprise to me, I feel I’ve always have found it easier to learn by doing, or being physically shown. I was a bit unsure when my score came back with the slowest being the Visual learning, I would have expected it to be my next strongest way of learning.

Mandy McMaster

Visual: 6
Aural: 14

Kinesthetic: 10

I have a multiple preference which is the common group of about 60%. I have three strong preferences which are aural, read and write and Kinesthetic (ARK). I was stunned that my results were higher in read and write than visual because I do like to look at images of certain things however I need to read a piece of information to really understand pictures that are in front of me. I love to learn new things by getting involved and doing them as long as someone has explained how to achieve it. My highest preference was aural as I find it easier to learn when someone explains things by talking to me. The way I learn best is by reading something as well as someone explaining it which is why aural, read and write are my highest preferences however i find it easier to learn by reading, listening, watching and doing tasks, It all depends on what im learning into what prefrence i use mostly .

It was nice to find out what kind of learner I am. From the outcome of the online quiz, I am a kinesthetic learner. I totally agree with the result, because when I was a high school student I loved cooking and tea ceremony sessions. I learned English better practically rather than theoretically. I can learn faster if I actually do something with my hands or listen and read something with reality or detailed examples then I can imagine. It helps me to memorise things quicker and the fact or experience will stay in my memory longer. That is the reason why I am good at Origami.

Physical: 18

I believe my results were accurate and represented me as a learner. I find when I am learning something new that I will be more likely to remember it if I have physically done it or have seen it. I find that when I am trying to spell a word and I am unsure I have to write down what I think it is and then by looking at it I am able to tell which one it should be. I also think that I do work best in groups where I am able to explain my ideas then put them down into an essay. If I have physically done something I am able to recall the event better then remember what it was I did. I also learn well through trial and error. By doing something realising that is wrong or is not going to work then trying to do it again. Many children learn well this way also. I find if I am listening to someone I am likely not to get all the information, as I don’t see myself as a good note taker and I am not a very fast writer. I find when I am reading I get board easy and loose concentration on what it is I should be taking in.
I find when I am studying I draw diagrams that help me remember information, I also use a lot of colour, and like to lay my work out so it is pleasing to the eye.
Confirming this allows me to utilise the way I learn best and incorporate it into my studies in order for me to succeed to the best of my ability.

I wanted to do both test to see if they gave the same result and these are the results of my test,
I have a multimodal (VARK) learning preference.
Visual: 10
Aural: 10

Kinesthetic: 10

My second test style score results were:

Visual: 15
Social: 14
Physical: 13
Aural: 17
Verbal: 10
Solitary: 11
Logical: 5

I have done a few test like this before and my outcome is still the same so i guess i havn't change the way i learn. I am a kinesthetic learner and i learn well best hands or being shown how to do something. I found that these result were true as i love being around people and being in a social enviroment. I am a very creative person and love art and music which i think is why i can learn things hands on more.

Jayne McCullough:

The Vark Questionaire Results.
My score:
“Visual: 8, Aural: 11, Read/write: 8, kinaesthetic: 8”
The Vark Questionaire suggested I use the following sheets to help:

§ Multimodal
§ Visual
§ Aural
§ Read-write
§ Kinaesthetic
This result surprised me because I assumed and always thought I was a visual learner more than a Aural learner; I’ve always thought I absorbed information more by seeing pictures and diagrams rather than Aurally well so I thought so this surprises me but I think that this will be a valuable thing to know for the future!
- Since I found out learn Aurally I have been experimenting with taking notes in class I have been trying to listen more to what Lecturers have been saying and bullet pointing key information where as before I would write a whole sentence saying what was being said because I had always done it this way but now by doing the bullet points and changing my strategy I am aware of the fact I am taking more information in and not absorbing as much less relevant information as I did before. I really think finding out I learn Aurally has really influenced my learning for the better!

I found this test quite interesting, because it showed me something about my way of learning that i didn't know before. I learned that im a multimoral learner meaning that i can adapt to almost any type of learning, although read and write is preferably one of the best way that I learn. I didnt know this untill i took the test and it's true now that I think of it. I learn more in reading information and then writting it down in my own words, that way i gusse it helps me process the information abit better. With that being said im also pleased to know that i can adapt to any type of learning that I would ever find myself in.

I found the test was quite true to my learning style. I am always able to do better when I work by myself. I was also wasn't surprised to find that the test had scored me a 3 for logical as I am not a wizz with numbers, and also tend to be spontaneous when it comes to my learning. I was surprised however to find that I scored a 8 for visual as I thought I was a visual learner, but since reflecting on my own learning just now I do see that I don't do well when it comes to visualizing situations. Finding this information out about myself will help me, I just hope that I do ask for help when I need it instead of trying to deal with things myself

These are the results of my Learning Styles Inventory
Visual: 18
Social: 20

Aural: 17
Verbal: 20
Solitary: 14
Logical: 10

I did both questionnaires to get a second opinion, the VARK test doesn’t reveal much about my learning style, whereas the Learning Styles Inventory test was more in-depth and is more informative with its results. I think they both reflect my learning approach accurately, though I thought the logical sector would have scored more points. I guess the computer knows best?

Carrol Bell
After completing the VARK questionnaire I found that my results were of a “mild Visual learning preference” with Kinesthetic close behind. I found these results to be quite accurate as I like to see what I am meant to be doing visually and learn more that way as well as being in the situation and learning by being hands on. My results are as follows:

Your scores were:
  • Visual: 7
  • Aural: 2
  • Read/Write: 2
